Jaipur: Kota’s government medical college scripted success by conducting its first kidney transplant. The transplant was performed on May 11 with the help of doctors from Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh Medical College.
The kidney transplant has added a new chapter in Kota’s medical college’s success story. A mother donated her kidney to her son who was suffering from chronic renal failure. The doctors conducted matching on Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) of donor and recipient and found it suitable for transplant.
Senior professor (urology) Dr SS Yadav from SMS medical college reached Kota and helped the local team of doctors comprising Dr Vikas Khandela (Nephrology), Dr Nilesh Jain and Dr Shalender Goyal (Urology), Dr Suresh Dulara (Anaesthasia).
“Recipient was suffering from chronic renal failure for some time. He had severe hypertension and on multiple medication, hence was a difficult case. Besides, his mother (donor) renal artery was quite narrow, so vessel anastomoses was challenging. However, everything went as per our vision, on declamping kidney immediately start throwing good amount of urine, it was great success on our part,” Dr Yadav told TOI.
Kota Medical College had got the permission for kidney transplant from the appropriate authority on July 30, 2021. The surgery lasted for five hours. The recipient is a 40-year-old man, who is now recovering at post-transplant care ICU. Kota Medical College has prepared a separate kidney transplant wing having two modular operation theatre and three ICU beds, which has now been used for the first time.
