Information technology (IT) is a key component of CU Denver’s 2030 Strategic Plan priorities. To help leverage this critical area, the university has named Dr. Matthew McCarville as assistant vice chancellor for IT services and operations. McCarville, DBA, will serve as the technical lead for the CU Denver-focused Office of Information Technology (OIT), primarily overseeing OIT’s numerous professional service and educational service units, which encompass classroom technology, customer relationship management (CRM), and academic technology.
McCarville will report to Chief Computing Officer Dr. Douglas Sicker and ultimately the university’s new vice chancellor for technology strategy and innovation when the position is filled. David Lowry, who served as the interim chief information officer for the CU Denver-centric OIT, has taken on a new role as senior director of enterprise operations and infrastructure for the OIT and will work closely with McCarville.
“The role of the CU-Denver OIT assistant vice chancellor is critical to the overall delivery of technology and business services to our students, faculty and staff, while also serving as a collaboration partner with our campus schools and colleges, the Anschutz Medical Campus and our Auraria campus counterparts,” Lowry said.
McCarville brings a wealth of experience in IT, data management, analytics, and business engineering process standards. Prior to joining CU Denver on June 1, he served as the president and CEO of Optimize Consulting Group, a boutique IT and data analytics consulting firm based in Florida as well as Vice President of the Education market for MTX Consulting Group and Chief Strategy Officer of their AI subsidiary mavQ AI. Before that, he served as the State of Florida’s chief data officer for more than 28 state colleges, 12 state universities, and 34 state agencies, as well as the University of Florida’s director of enterprise data management, which encompassed areas of research computing, data lake/warehouse/engineering, master data management, data trustee/stewardship, analytics and reporting, and customer relationship management (CRM) solutions. He also served as the first global data scientist for human capital services at the global firm PwC and worked in commercial software, artificial intelligence, and analytics for Union Pacific Railroad/PS Technology (in Louisville, CO).
McCarville received his doctorate of business administration in AI and business intelligence analytics, as well as his MBA in strategy and IT, MS in business intelligence and analytics, MSc in agile and waterfall project management, and BSBA in management from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He has also completed Georgia Institute of Technology’s executive education program in data strategy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s program in distributed computing and big data, and Boise State University’s executive program in descriptive analytics.
McCarville will join CU Denver in person starting Sept. 1. With his support and leadership, CU Denver’s OIT is poised for a successful future, Lowry said. Sicker agrees. “Dr. McCarville brings an amazing set of leadership, technical skills and experience that perfectly complements our needs as we elevate IT services to match the vision laid out in the 2030 Strategic Plan,” he said.
