Bette Midler was born in Oahu, Hawaii, where her mother was a seamstress while her father was a painter. Midler performed in several local productions during her high school years before enrolling at the University of Hawaii. She played a seasick extra passenger and moved to Hollywood with the film crew. After saving enough money from her uncredited roles, Midler moved to New York.

New York was filled with challenges for Midler, who was adamant about making her career work. She gave her first big performance in 1965 in the Experimental Theater. She played in Off-Broadway productions of Cinderella Revisited and Miss Nefertiti Regrets. Within a year, she was cast in her first Broadway production in Fiddler On The Roof in 1966 as Tzeitel. She worked in the role for three years before joining the Off-Broadway production of Salvation in 1969, as noted by Broadway World. Becoming The Divine Miss M

 

Bette Midler made her music debut in 1972 with The Divine Miss M, which had Barry Manilow’s production. The album became a massive success and went platinum in North America. Her album was nominated for Album Of The Year at the Grammys, and she received the award for Best New Artist. Midler not only released studio albums but also produced and sang for movie soundtracks. In 1988, she produced the music for her drama/comedy film Beaches, wherein the song Wind Beneath My Wings peaked at the No.1 spot on Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts for a whopping 29 weeks, as stated by Billboard.


Movie roles also came calling for the singer, and she ventured into acting in the late 1970s. After working in many movies as an uncredited extra, Bette Middle was cast as a lead in Mark Rydell’s The Rose in 1979. The film was a critical and commercial success, with Midler working in front of the camera and providing songs for its track. She earned an Oscar nomination and won two Golden Globe Awards: New Star Of The Year and Best Actress. Her song The Rose also won her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
