Making it in the battle royale genre is tricky. There are dozens of failures for every Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone-like success story. Thankfully, Apex Legends is in the latter camp.
Earlier this week, EA released its financial earnings report. Live service titles drove much of the company’s profits during Q3 2022.
“Our healthy live services growth was driven by strength across our broad-based portfolio, mostly notably by Apex Legends and FIFA,” Chris Suh, EA chief financial officer, said. “Apex Legends is up over 40% for the year, taking it past the $2 billion milestone in lifetime net bookings. Season 12 finished yesterday and was the most successful ever.”
Yes, $2 billion in profits from a game where people can run around inside gargantuan carcasses. That cheeky tone is likely part of why Apex Legends is such a success — it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Season 13 of Apex Legends is already going over well with fans for the most part. The upcoming mobile version isn’t far off either, with registration open now.
EA also announced that FIFA 22 is the most successful entry in series history. Ironic, given the recent split between EA and FIFA. The franchise will live on as EA Sports FC, while FIFA develops soccer games with several (yet-to-be-revealed) third-party developers.
