Research and innovation projects advance NL’s offshore emissions reduction efforts

Companies and organizations researching ways to reduce offshore greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions presented the results of their work today at an event hosted by Energy Research & Innovation Newfoundland & Labrador (ERI).

Natural Resources Canada supported the projects through the Emissions Reduction Fund, Offshore Research, Development, and Demonstration (RD&D) Program, which ERI managed.

The 18 projects ranged from feasibility studies to technology development, adaptation, demonstration, and field trials. The projects studied carbon capture and storage; emissions monitoring; the feasibility of using renewable energy sources to support offshore operations; aspects of offshore drilling, production, and marine transportation; and examined the use of technology and other methods to optimize energy efficiencies in power generation.

Eleven projects advanced their respective technologies from concept to implementation, and several are ready for commercialization. Other companies that participated in the program plan to further develop and commercialize their technologies. The feasibility studies developed through the ERF Offshore RD&D Program will help inform the industry’s future emissions reduction efforts.

The program included 76 collaborators in Canada and seven internationally, between small technology and engineering companies, offshore operators, universities, and research and industry associations.

“Reducing emissions from our offshore oil and gas sector is a key step towards achieving our climate goals and building a prosperous low-carbon economy. That is why the federal government has supported the research, development, deployment, and scaling of clean technologies through initiatives like the ERF. I am pleased to see the many innovative solutions advanced by Energy Research & Innovation Newfoundland & Labrador and their partners”, said the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources.

“The Emissions Reduction Fund Offshore RD&D Program has been a step change in supporting emissions reduction work in Newfoundland and Labrador. The response, the broad range of projects, and their results nicely complement and contribute to ongoing efforts to reduce emissions offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. ERI is quite pleased with the way this work has catalyzed a significant increase in collaboration, focus, and capacity in the field of offshore emissions reduction in Canada”, said Dave Finn, CEO, of Energy Research & Innovation Newfoundland & Labrador.
