DEMING – Saturday’s kickoff party for Lemonade Day at the Starmax Family Entertainment Center was a huge success, according to Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debbie Troyer. An additional 50 young entrepreneurs (grade level K-5) signed up and received their swag filled backpacks, enjoyed pizza and lemonade, and had tons of fun as their mentors registered for the May 21, Lemonade Day event.
The K-5 youth will have the opportunity over the next 30-days to use their workbooks to practice, prepare and compete as they enter the small business world to make money and spend some, save some, and share some.
Free workshops are still happening and registration is still available during standard business hours at the Visitor’s Center and the Chamber (800 E. Pine St.) and at Play Sharity (301 S. Tin St.).
Troyer is asking the citizens of Luna County to go out and buy as much lemonade as possible on Saturday, May 21, to support the young business owners. “Drink up Deming, this experience will affect our children for a lifetime,” she said.
Children in Deming and Luna County will be able to set up their lemonade stand businesses throughout the city and open for sales on May 21st. The money they make will be theirs to keep. They are encouraged to spend some of their profit, save some of their profit, and share some of their profit with a charity of their choice.
Lemonade Day was started in Houston, Texas in 2007 as a 501(c)3 by entrepreneur and philanthropist, Michael Holthouse. Since then, it has expanded to more than 81 programs throughout North America, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. The average profit for participating children last year was $224, however many children in high customer traffic areas throughout their cities make much more – many even over $1,000 on that one day.
Deming and Albuquerque are the lone New Mexico Lemonade Day events.
