Canowindra is a small community with a population of less than 3000 people but it is steeped in harness racing history as one of the best breeding nurseries in New South Wales.

But the central west town has also produced a plethora of talented pacers and horsemen.

Driver Mat Rue

One of Canowindra’s more recent success stories is that of the now Bathurst based Mat Rue who kicked off his successful career in the town.

A third generation participant, Rue was raised in the sport and cut his teeth driving throughout the western districts when working with his parents at their hobby stables.

Now fifteen years on, Rue is prominent in the game, training a team of pacers of his own at the Bathurst Showground while his services as a reinsman are much sought after, such is his ability in the sulky.

Six months working with some top trainers in America where he gained valuable experience, was the turning point in Mat’s career.

Shortly after returning to Australia, he worked for the powerful McCarthy stable which provided him with the highlight of his career thus far, winning a Miracle Mile aboard bonny mare Baby Bling.

At 32, Rue is now staring down the barrel of another significant milestone, sitting just three wins away from driving 1000 winners.

Although it appears the feat is inevitable, Rue cannot achieve the feat on Wednesday (Aug.3) at Bathurst as he has just one drive aboard Bella Bling (Bettor’s Delight) in race three.

“The countdown has been on for a few weeks now,” said Rue.

“I have had a few people alert me to the fact that I was getting close to the milestone within the past month, so it has been in the back of my mind.

“It would be a humbling personal achievement should I achieve it. As a kid, growing up, all I ever wanted to do was to drive a winner.

“But while I have driven another 996, the enjoyment I get from finishing first past the post never changes. It is why I stay in the game and love the sport.

“It is extra special when you drive that first winner for an owner or trainer and witness the joy that it brings them. And I have been incredibly lucky to have had the wonderful support from so many participants in the game.”
